BPO Second Trombonist Timothy Smith hails from Reading, PA. Last season, Mr. Smith served as Acting Principal Trombone of the San Diego Symphony, and in 2007 was Acting 2nd Trombone for the Jacksonville Symphony. Tim has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and Pops, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Symphony, Virginia Symphony, as well as many regional orchestras throughout greater Chicago. Internationally, Tim has performed in Germany, Ireland, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. In the chamber music realm, Tim has been a founding member of the Second City Brass Quintet, as well as the CT3 Trombone Quartet, winners of the 2005 ITA International Trombone Quartet Competition. Tim has served on the music faculty of San Diego State University, and maintained a private teaching studio while living in Chicago. Being the newest member of the BPO, Tim looks forward to interacting musically with the Buffalo community, both on stage and off.
Timothy studied with Dr. Harold Reynolds at Ithaca College, and following graduation in 2003, moved to Chicago to complete his Master’s studies with Michael Mulcahy and Charlie Vernon at Northwestern University. Some of Mr. Smith’s additional teachers include Nitzan Haroz, Mark Fisher, Megumi Kanda, James Miller, and Randy Hawes.
